CTEM: Continuous Threat Exposure Management

CTEM (Continuous Threat Exposure Management) is a program defined by Gartner that manages an organization's exposures through a repeating cycle of scoping, discovery, prioritization, validation and mobilization. Nokta Guard designs this program with your organization and runs the cycle on a regular cadence.

What is CTEM and how does it differ from vulnerability management?

Traditional vulnerability management focuses mostly on scannable software flaws. CTEM broadens the idea of exposure to include misconfigurations, over-privileged accounts, forgotten assets and the paths an attacker could follow.

The key difference is that prioritization is driven by business impact and real exploitability. The goal is not to fix everything but to fix what matters most to the business first.

The five stages of CTEM

The cycle defined by Gartner has five stages and repeats with every iteration.

  1. Scoping: together with business units, define which processes and assets to protect, such as internet-facing systems or payment infrastructure.
  2. Discovery: identify the assets in scope along with their vulnerabilities, misconfigurations and privilege issues.
  3. Prioritization: rank exposures by exploitability, threat intelligence, compensating controls and business impact.
  4. Validation: test whether priority exposures are actually exploitable through attack path analysis, attack simulation or manual testing, and measure how existing controls respond.
  5. Mobilization: get findings to their owners and drive approvals and remediation workflows, addressing organizational as well as technical blockers.

What does Nokta Guard do in a CTEM program?

  • We run scoping workshops with your business units and agree on the cycle cadence.
  • We consolidate output from your existing scanning, inventory and security tools into a single exposure list.
  • Our offensive security team manually validates priority exposures.
  • We define workflows and metrics for routing findings to owners and tracking closure.
  • At the end of each cycle we give leadership a summary of risk trends.
