What Is Penetration Testing (Pentest)?

Penetration testing (pentesting) is an authorized, controlled attack in which security experts find weaknesses in your systems and prove whether they can actually be exploited.

Automated vulnerability scanners list known issues, but they often miss business logic flaws, chained vulnerabilities and privilege escalation paths. A penetration test shows whether a weakness is truly exploitable and what data it exposes.

Every test starts with reconnaissance; we map the hosts, services and entry points an outside attacker could reach before a single exploit is tried.

Confirmed weaknesses are exploited under agreed rules to prove real impact, from a single flaw to a chain that reaches sensitive data.

Each finding is ranked by business risk and reported with proof and a clear fix. A retest after remediation documents that the gaps are closed.

Methodology

Our Proven 5-Step Methodology

Every project follows the same traceable method from scoping to sign-off: discovery and planning, information gathering, controlled exploitation, analysis and reporting, retesting.

  1. Scoping and authorization: Targets, testing windows, rules of engagement and written permission are agreed.

  2. Reconnaissance: Target systems, services and the attack surface are mapped.

  3. Exploitation and validation: Weaknesses are exploited in a controlled way to prove real impact and eliminate false positives.

  4. Reporting: Findings are prioritized and reported for both management and technical teams.

  5. Retesting: After remediation, we verify and document that findings are closed.

Test Approaches

The approach depends on how much information you share up front.

  1. White Box

Architecture, source code or configuration details are shared; provides the deepest coverage.

  2. Gray Box

User credentials or partial documentation are provided; measures what an authenticated user or insider could do. This is the most common choice.

  3. Black Box

No prior information; simulates an external attacker.

Which regulations require penetration testing?

BDDK and SPK regulations and standards such as PCI DSS expect regular penetration testing from the organizations in their scope, and EPDK's cybersecurity competency model also includes technical testing and audit requirements. See our BDDK, EPDK and PCI DSS penetration testing pages for sector-specific requirements.

Comparison

Penetration test or vulnerability scan?

They are not alternatives but complements. The difference lies in purpose, depth and verification method.

Criterion Penetration Testing In depth Vulnerability Scanning
Approach Manual attack scenarios plus automated tools Automated scanning tools
Depth Business logic flaws and real attack chains Quick view of known vulnerabilities
Verification Expert verification and proof of exploitation Prioritised findings list reviewed by an expert
Output Project-specific, audit-ready report Periodic scan report with trend comparison
Frequency At least once a year and after major changes Monthly or quarterly

For continuous visibility, plan penetration testing together with our Vulnerability Management (periodic scanning) service.

What do you receive?

  • Executive summary: A risk overview written for non-technical readers.
  • Technical findings: Description, affected asset and reproduction steps for each issue.
  • CVSS score: Standardized severity rating for every finding.
  • Evidence: Screenshots and request/response samples.
  • Remediation guidance: Actionable, prioritized fixes.
  • Retest report: Current status of fixed and open findings.

Who is it for?

Organizations of any size that process customer data, run internet-facing applications and services, or are subject to regulations such as BDDK, EPDK, SPK or PCI DSS. Penetration tests are also commissioned before launching a new application, after major infrastructure changes or at the request of a customer or auditor.

Our team consists of specialists holding internationally recognized offensive security certifications: OSCP, OSEP, CRTO, CEH, eMAPT, eCPTXv2, eWPTX / eWPTXv2, plus TSE Senior Penetration Tester and TSE Certified Penetration Tester personnel certificates.

Choosing a Provider

How to choose a penetration testing provider?

From the outside, penetration testing services look alike; the difference shows in the scoping method, team expertise, report quality and post-test support.

  1. 01

    Who will perform the test?

Ask about the experience and certifications of the team that will do the work, and whether any of it will be subcontracted.

  2. 02

    Which methodology will be used?

Ask for a method based on a recognised framework such as OWASP, PTES or NIST SP 800-115, including manual verification.

  3. 03

    Will testing harm our systems?

Rules of engagement, test hours and emergency contacts should be agreed in writing; risky steps should never run without your approval.

  4. 04

    How is retesting planned?

The proposal should state clearly when and to what scope fixes will be retested.
